How to Write a Voiceover Script That Keeps Viewers Watching
The audio is half of every video. A strong voice reading a weak script still loses viewers, while a clear, interesting script keeps them watching even with simple visuals. Whether you record your own voice or use an AI voice, the script is where the work happens. Here is a practical method.
Start with one clear idea
Before writing, finish this sentence: "After watching this video, the viewer will know how to ..." If you cannot complete it, the topic is too wide. A video about one idea is easier to write and easier to remember.
Use a simple structure
- Hook (first 5 to 10 seconds): a surprising fact, a question or a promise. Example: "Most people make this mistake in their first video, and it costs them half their viewers."
- Context (10 to 20 seconds): why the topic matters to the viewer.
- Main points (the body): two to five points, each with a short example.
- Summary: repeat the key takeaway in one sentence.
- Call to action: one clear request, such as subscribe, visit a link or try the tool.
Write for listening
- Use short sentences, around 10 to 20 words.
- Prefer simple words. Replace "utilize" with "use" and "commence" with "start".
- Speak to one person with "you", not to a crowd.
- Avoid long lists in a single sentence. Break them into several short sentences.
- Repeat important ideas in different words; listeners cannot re-read.
Control the pace
An average speaking pace is about 140 to 160 words per minute. A 5 minute video therefore needs roughly 700 to 800 words. Use paragraph breaks where you want a longer pause, and keep important numbers or names separate so they are easy to catch.
Match the script to the visuals
Write one line per scene and note what the viewer will see. When the voice describes something, show it. When nothing new is shown for more than 6 to 8 seconds, attention drops, so add a new image, clip or text on screen.
Edit ruthlessly
- Read the script aloud. Mark every place where you stumble and rewrite it.
- Delete the first sentence of each paragraph if it only repeats the heading.
- Remove filler such as "basically", "actually" and "in order to".
- Cut anything that does not help the one clear idea.
Test with an AI voice
An AI voice is a fast way to test your script. Generate the audio, listen once with your eyes closed and mark the weak parts. This takes minutes and often reveals problems you cannot see on paper. Improve the script, generate again and you will have a final version much faster than recording over and over.
